MANGOEST 4U

Post by Delabelle » Wed Sep 08, 2021 2:10 pm

My first six LW Format 4U 1inch modules i'll test out and designed in the first place for the tiny boats.

EGB = Bezier Envelope Generator
VCLF = Ladder Filter
RSG = Random Signal Generator
FVCO = 2 OP FM Voice
2VCO = 2 Voice with seperate tuning and gain
VCW = Triple wavefolder

I'll elaborate the modules ones the testing and protos are OK ;)

I aim also no wiring involved btw.

Very cool! Would be a great compact unit! With the FM osc and the need for modulation, I could see adding another envelope instead of the shaper or the RSG. But I guess the idea is that people could choose?

Although these are LW format, there is also a case available that’s 9” wide, so in theory you could add three more modules this size, or say, 5 of these and a 4” panel etc. I think you could get enough modulation and mixing for a small FM system.

Here’s the link, if you didn’t catch it:

I know details are forthcoming, but it looks like the up/down switch toggles the CV inputs between VCOs (and perhaps stores them?). If so, it could be really fun to modulate those controls using a jack as a voltage-controlled switch. I split the difference with a “cycle” control in the last DTG I got from Charlie: one has a real switch, one has a jack, and it’s been great.

2 first are born VCLF and RSG

VCLF is pure analog and is designed around the V2044 chip

RSG is build with a Arduino Nano behind it and is a crossbreed between Turing Machine and Marbles

These are on full test now 🥳

The 1" family keeps growing and getting a full test.
🚀

VCF: Ladder filter but has to be tweaked a bit. Is too agressive at the moment
RSG: Random Signal Generator. Crossb read between Turing and Marbles
2VCO: Like a double Moog type vco at the same time played with CV control also on the second gain VCO
FVCO: 2OP FM VCO
AVCO: you can call it a harmonic VCO with odd and even harmonics mixed
EGB: Special one, is a Bezier Envelope Generator plus log and linear EG available
CHAOS: A second generation chaos modulator with double eye
2COMP: My favourite one. Double compressor that will tear your pants in two
DUCKER: Usefull module to give sidechain effect

And more to follow

I'll be finalizing the build docs in the next days for the already tested inch modules but here are new ones that i'll prototype within 2 weeks:

QUAN: Mega quantizer with a lot of tricks
RLPG: Resonant LPG
XWS: Double to QUAD controlable wavefolder
XWSX: Expander for the XWS to make it a stereo QUAD to OCTA controlable wavefolder

For those who want to build some of the prototype modules in 1" can shoot me a PM

Price is 20 EUR + shipping for 1 panel with front and back PCB.
Some need minimal rectfication.

Those that will be available are:
EGB = Bezier Envelope Generator
VCLF = Ladder Filter
RSG = Random Signal Generator
FVCO = 2 OP FM Voice
2VCO = 2 Voice with seperate tuning and gain
CHAOS: A second generation chaos modulator with double eye
2COMP: Double compressor
DUCKER: Usefull module to give sidechain effect
Peace

Good luck trying to use the 1,2,3 knobs once their jacks and chaos, XOR jacks are patched! Why not exchange the jacks with the yellow ovals <--indicators? Your panel callout does not list any of the indicators? I'm assuming these are indicators only?

Put them close to the knobs and the jacks will have some breathing room. Right now the biggest chaos this section will generate is in trying to use it! ;)

Edit: likewise if you exchange the jacks and indicators for XOR and Chaos, the jacks will not inhibit the knob use as much. The present arrangement is an operational nightmare.

Yes well the panel design wasn’t mine at the base. And kept that design. Find it fun to use, since one year now I think.
It is a way of seeing things and you describe it just as if you already used it. Of course nothing is perfect in life.
At the end it is a very fun and functional instrument to use.

I suppose it would just come down to how often you patch everything at once. :hihi:

I don’t think it would be much of an issue under most conditions. Definitely looks like a lot of fun!

I’ll take a closer look in a bit. On my phone now, so everything is tiny :woah:

Does it have a noise source, or is that derived from FM and logic? Just curious. I notice the data in, so I’m thinking shift register? (best kind of noise IMO)

No direct noise, but noise could be achieved by combining the stepped signals from chaos directly to the one of the pitch inputs of the vco’s if you want

Definitely! I was doing something similar the other night using an LFSR (through DAC) into FM inputs.

I listened to more of the clips. Sounds nice!
