Me too I like wiring a lot and it gives me peace and stay focused but for a 1" panel I thought wiring is maybe too much. But then nobody holds you to leave the pot pcb aside and wire the whole thing …

just for reference, what's the color convention you're using for the jacks?

Thanks again for the comments!

The jack colors are a bit less rigid than Serge for example. White is pulse/gate/logic (unipolar)
Grey is “generally control” whether AC or DC
Blue is “generally audio”

I don’t usually AC couple anything, unless it’s really necessary. The output modules are always AC coupled, just to be sure any offsets are finally removed before hitting audio equipment.

Thanks. Just asking since we decided to use Charlie's LW format color convention for kits that use LW panels, and trying to think ahead on the (hopeful!) possibility we might be able to offer more Stroh kits in the future :)

He usually responds quite quickly, so you should get something soon I would guess.

I am waiting for restock for Blue tiny boats and the first ten golden boats, but if you are in the US then synthcube should cover the sales for some tiny boats. Unless they are sold out.

Very happy you like the boats

I thought I'd put a link to my new circuit, PCB, etc. thread, so I stop filling this up with things that aren't directly related to these cases.

I wanted to try some standard LW modules in one. I’m thinking a 1” VCO in the middle instead of the LFO would make this a fun little box. No output, so it definitely needs a companion box.

OR the box itself needs a spec for a couple pair of holes.
Two 3/8" 9,5mm on 3/4" 19mm center, and two 5/16" 8mm also on 19mm center. Stereo 1/4" outs and nana ins. Oo oO or oO Oo
Then you could have any of many output module PCBs mounted by the jacks. Inside the boat.
Simple wire between 1/4" 6,3mm jack and nana makes a two channel format jumbler for a minimum version. Now every boat has a means to deal with the 'problem' at whatever level the owner sees fit to use.
Treat utility modules as stars instead of backup singers.
Treat power supplies like Rockstars instead of roadies!

Batchas made something like this for his frac modules; I don’t know if he used something like Bill’s Mixer or his own design, but it looked dead handy.

That's not a bad idea! Could even have a slot cut, that fits standardized output modules that could mount in the space. Then things like MIDImplants, balanced drivers, headphone amps, etc. could be installed. If you have more than one of these cases, then you could have a lot more IO.

I do think I'd like to come up with some 1" IO modules that could be installed on one side, for various types of connectivity for how they are now.

Yes, the Buchla boats are examples of this taken to its logical oval and four screws conclusion. But I would suggest caution in going to a slot which now needs mounting holes and then PEMS for those. And then. Keep it simple and it fits better in this new Tinyboat category, I think.

I'd use the oO Oo -on 3/4" 19mm centers- version which will take up roughly 3" 75mm along the bottom rear of the case. You don't want it on the sides becaus then it eats into potential module depth. By putting it in a single line row at the bottom you preserve the greatest space for modules and by having it on the rear face -which can become the front face with a simple 180- then you enhance the space for modules as you minimize the 'jack module' intrusion due to 'footprint' space already required and used up for mounting panels. AKA there is more wasted interior space at the top and bottom of each module than the sides.

What the 3/4 spacing does for you is allow the middle larger holes to be drilled out to 5/8" 16mm which will then accomodate the DIN5's of MIDI. <--Using a step drill makes this something any DIYer can do with ease and accuracy. OR any other DIN use like power or interface. OR XLR. ;)
In a fully worked out version you might add two more outer holes of 1/8" 3mm diameter. Preserving the 3/4" on center. These could be mtg screw holes for a plate. OR they could also be drilled out to 5/16" 8mm which then gives two 'stereo' sets of bananas at shorting bar distance and the middle MIDI, XLR or 1/4" 6,3mm jack holes. Finally the 3/8" 9,5mm holes on 3/4" centers *also* fit standard pot bushings, and the 5/16" 8mm holes will fit modern standard pots. To fit the 1/4" jacks the hiles need to be at least 5/16 above the boat bottom and 3/8" is enough to allow the pots. Old style pots with 3/8" bushings will need 7/16" 11mm hole center to inside rear plane.

There's quite a bit that can be achieved with o 0 O O 0 o, aka m B J J B m. This works out to 4" 100mm of width which appears will still fit in the space on either side of the present holes. Also fits into a plan of 4-1/4" PCBS often used for Frac and Euro modules to keep those costs down too.
Asking your sheet metal fab to punch or laser 6 more holes should cost next to nothing and there's so much gained for the format.

Agreed, that spacing would work out great!

I like the paint too much on the ones I have now, so maybe I'll buy another one down the line to do some experimentation with. :hihi: However, I'm holding out to get one of the larger ones first.

I'm definitely up for some experimenting on a separate one sometime though. If I come up with something decent, I'll post it.

There's one thing that I've wanted to try for a few years now, just because, and maybe a little output module like this would be a cool place to try it.

I've wanted to do a highly accurate DC servo output module. I want to use the LME49720 opamps and the LME49600 high current buffer/driver IC. Just seems like a fun idea, and I haven't gotten around to it so far. (something different to try anyway) It would eliminate big AC caps for headphone driving for one, so it would minimized distortion. Might be nice for line as well.

I realize that's a bit overkill when dealing with potentially noisy signals from a modular synthesizer, but I still feel like having a nice output makes a difference.

Anyway, off on a tangent now.
