CRAP Programmer

Buchla, Serge, Studio.h, Northern Light Modular, Keen Assoc., 1979, Vedic Scapes, etc. Usually expensive, often found sniffing corks.
Be sure to look into MANUFACTURER SUB-FORA as well..

CRAP Programmer

Post by dksynth » Tue May 26, 2020 8:28 pm

Programmer for LW format 4U modular

love letter to the Serge N-Step style programmer with some Buchla influence
One more PCB rev to fine tune some things but it looks like as things spool up post-pandemic we'll get some panels made and they'll be available.
101072983_10222996559324907_670726862019756032_n.jpg
8 column, 4 row
Vertical sequencer with CLOCK and RESET
TIE and SKIP options per step
HOLD, RESET and PRESET for the horizontal sequencer
Preset Address
Gate Select IN and active stage OUT
Goes both ways

-All red logic/gate inputs will accept a wide range of inputs. Anything that passes a threshold of around 1V will trigger properly. Use waveshaping for timing variations!
-LED indication above programmer buttons shows both the current ACTIVE STAGE and the current PRESET STAGE.
-Preset Address (lower right) allows you to address any stage via voltage input. 0v=step 1 5v=step 8. You can use this to make a crude quantizer, trilling effects, odd time variations, lots of stuff. Addressing a stage via voltage also loads that stage as the current PRESET stage. The ALL GATE output always fires when a new preset stage is loaded .... this means you can use a voltage to address stages and anytime there is a change the ALL GATE output will fire for triggering envelopes / what have you.
-When TIE is active for a stage, the previous stage values will be carried through. If stage 4 is set to TIE, stage 3 will be the output for two clock pulses. TIE is useful for pulling notes out of a sequence while keeping the overall timing/stage count.
-When SKIP is active for a stage, the sequencer will immediately skip through to the next stage.

thanks to sam, JP, guy, charlie and serge for ideas and help when I got stuck on this n that :)

stoked to hear that this may be available to the masses! I'm assuming LW format? Will the black panel be the only option?

The separate vertical clock sounds fun.

Yep, LW!

Black is what I make for my system but LoudestWarning UK expressed interest in doing some panels in their style for it.

Super fun! Lets you chain the A>B>C>D for 32 note sequence, among other things...

Thanks! I waffled on the name but heck ... it is CRAP and CRAP it will stay. It is intended to be kind of a "greatest hits" of serge/buchla style programmer features and I'm having a great time playing with it! I'll try put up a video with some of the things you can do with it when I get a chance.

Ah, that's so sool! Great work, as always.
Waiting for LW's take on panel design for this.

I'd guess full SMD?
Will you release the schematics/parts of it for educational purposes? That would be great.

It got me thinking of 4 step sequences played like arpeggios with the buttons. Gonna try patching it up with some CGS to test drive it. Any shots of the back? I'm still feeling dread about building another 8 step programmer but the additional features are too cool to pass up :deadbanana:

Yep, good for that as well!
back looks like this:
99425360_2580401005505055_6941788716620840960_n.jpg
some kludges visible and the silly overabundance of header holes ... the panel PCB is all THT and the daughter board is all SMD.

Mostly SMD. The panel PCB that holds all the pots and stuff has all THT components.
the schematic will be available to those who are building one for themselves, posting it publicly I'm not sure about, if you just want to check it out for ideas (or hopefully to find mistakes I may have made!) just PM me and I'll bounce it your way when it is done.

Nice! This looks like a wonderful constellation of elements. Not being too familiar with the Buchla world, I'm curious which aspects relate there?

addressing stages via voltage input is something from buchla 245/246. I added some more controls though.

Uh, that is a pretty neat sequencer. Really love the feature set but wish the blue LEDs weren't blue but something less aggressive to the eye.
