I just followed the directions on GitHub to update the firmware to 1.3 on my 0.9 board.
After I flashed the firmware, said it was successful…
After I plugged it in to power I noticed that it isn’t working…
No screen no nothing just the green flash and red, then solid red….
What happened?

I’ve tried it several times, exactly like it said on the github page.

Hi everyone, newbie here 😃✨
Wondering if any of you fine specimens could upload or point me to some high-res pics of both front and back of a fully assembled and operational OR Rev 0.95? Just want to be sure I don't mess things up, specially with the resistors.

Thanks a bunch

EDIT: Nevermind, Juan Carlos already directed me to the IBOM at OR's Github, it's all there

new owner here...
(it just arrived yesterday!)

is there working MIDI clock IN?
i stumbled on a button combination to get MIDI to display on the screen but it's not running at tempo with everything else in the room. :P
which made for some interesting rhythmic structures.

also...
is there a more thorough manual anywhere?

thanks for any help!

here's my first noiz session with it:

Hi! midi does work, but it is still buggy. I have been trying to sync it to my daw and other midi sequencers, and then tempos don’t match. Say the daw runs at 120, opera rotas reports 90bpm. That’s the closest i have been to syncing.
i tried to manual sync, with similar tempos, but it’s hard to beat match (sort of) since opera rotas does not have a start/ stop button. I have also tried syncing to opera rota analog clock, but i have not had good results with my setup, since i have been trying to convert analog clock to midi. i’m still testing things.
Besides that opera rotas is a great sounding machine.
Is the audio out meant to be for a mono or stereo cable?
Looking forward to tight sync in a future update :)

I've been having the same issue with midi sync too. Seems like the bpm displayed on the opera rotas isn't accurate (without midi, the opera rotas at 120 plays faster than ableton's metronome at 120). I found some success by using ableton's new tempo follow feature plus midi and it syncs fairly well, though the tempo is stuck at 170 or something weird.
I wonder if there is a way to mod the board to add clock in?

Regardless, I agree, it's a joy to play around with and a fun build!
I've been using a mono cable, and looking at the OPL2's schematic it looks like it's a mono output (or dual mono, I'm not the best at deciphering schematics yet)
Don't go to art school like I did

Hi! Thanks for the tips! I had not thought of the ableton tempo follower…probably because i did not know it existed! :ripbanana:

If MIDI sync implementation is a problem, could we at least get DIN sync? Please?

The instrument as such is great, but it's a bit sad you can't integrate it in a setup clocked by an external master clock.
I, for instance, am using the E-RM MIDI Clock set to one channel putting out MIDI and the other one putting out DIN sync. That is because I use quite a few devices that don't have MIDI in, and the Opera Rotas would excellently fit in there.

Ok, finally we have a solid MIDI sync. It comes from a brand new firmware. You can get it here:

https://github.com/spherical-sound-soci ... es/pangrus

A few built units available in my Etsy store too:

https://www.etsy.com/es/shop/SphericalSound

PANGRUS EDITION (ver 1.0)
Courtesy of Andrea (Pangrus). Thank you so much!!

This firmware has MIDI working (on OPERA ROTAS rev 0.9 and higher). If you have a previous version, you will need a chiclet and a little bit of hacking to get the midi working

This version uses a different bootloader, so if you want to flash it it could be convenient to get a new bluepill, flash this bootloader and then flash the pangrus firmware, so now you can change firmware just replacing one or the other bluepill.

-If your bluepill is low or medium density (64kb) use hid_generic_pc13.bin bootloader.
-If your bluepill is high density (128kb) use hid_generic_pc13_hd.bin bootloader.

If you dont know how to do it, you can get preflashed microcontrollers in my stores in the coming hours/days

The keyboard shorcuts are somewhat different. Also the songs has changed. The keys are:

REC - start/stop. The ">" sign in the upper left appears when the OR sequencer is running.
AUTO - engage AUTO mode. In AUTO mode, the active channel changes every step. When you move a knob, the correspondig parameter of the active channel is affected.
AUTO + Pressing the keys from 1 to 8 load the sound presets
LOCK - engage LOCK mode. Pressing the keys from 1-8 the corresponding channel toggles from locked to unocked.
EDIT - engage EDIT mode. Press the keys 1-16 to edit the active pattern. The pattern is shown on the leds.
CHAN - engage CLEAR mode. Pressing the keys from 1-8 clears the corresponding channel.
RND - engage RANDOM mode. Pressing the keys from 1-8 randomize the corresponding channel. Randomization is made with the euclidean algorithm.
SAVE - engage MUTE mode. Pressing the keys from 1-8 the corresponding channel toggles from muted to unmuted.
SHIFT + AUTO - toggles slave MIDI mode.
SHIFT + LOCK - locks all channels.
SHITH + CHAN - clears all channels.
SHIFT + RND - Select generative mode. In GEN1 mode every 16 step the gates of one pattern and one sound parameters is randomized. In GEN2 mode gates are unchanged; every step one sound parameter is randomized. Bpm selection is disabled.
SHIFT + SAVE - mutes all channels.

Is there any specific info (idiot proof, preferably) concerning the chiclet, the opto coupler, and what exactly 'a little bit of hacking' means?

I have the chiclet built but I still have to test it, determine the hackeability and write a little post explaining it. Not sure when I´ll find the time... maybe in a week.

It would need the most basic soldering possible, just 3 cables and 5 components. You also needs to learn to flash a bluepill or get one preflashed.

If some dude wants to sell preflashed bluepills and ready made chiclets, PM so we can coordinate it

I do have one of these ST-Link v.2 programmer sticks and hope it will work on my computer.

(I gave up on a MI Branches since it turned out impossible to get the required programmer - a different one, which is apparently known to require old drivers that W10 doesn't allow installing - working :( ).

HOW TO FLASH THE FIRMWARE IN A BLANK BLUEPILL

Is recommendable to keep your original bluepill (1.3 firm) and get a new one to flash the new firmware, so in case that you dont get it, you still have the older firm.

You need to have a st link vs gadget, that looks like this:

Image
And costs 2-3USD in ebay and local stores

Then, you have to install ST LINK UTILITY
https://www.st.com/en/development-tools ... nk004.html

(You will need to create a free account to download it)

Once you have installed it, open ST LINK UTILITY.

Download the lastest version of the firmware

https://github.com/spherical-sound-soci ... es/pangrus

OR_Pangrus_1.0.hex

In the same folder, donwload the bootloader:
hid_generic_pc13.bin

Connect the ST LINK gadget to a USB port of your computer. Then connect the gatget to your OPERA ROTAS following this schematic:

Image

In ST LINK UTILITY:

Image
-open the bootloader, click "PROGRAM VERIFY" on the ST LINK UTILY.
-open the firmware that you dowloaded (pangrus), click "PROGRAM VERIFY" on the ST LINK UTILY.

Your OR is updated with the latest firm.

That sounds very reasonable, I just ordered one :tu: .

And thanks for these instructions, looks doable.
That leaves only the how-to for the hardware hacking/chiclet/wiring :D.

thanks for all the info...but...dumb question here...
what the frack is a BluePill and where can we get one?
hah hah!
(obviously a general search for bluepill "comes up" with something else entirely.)
yeah...pun intended.

The bluepill is this bit:

Image

You can replace it and having a different firmware in each one

You can get one in ebay/amazon/aliexpress (64kb or 128kb). You also need the programmer, which is a st link v2, costs 2-3 USD and looks like this:

If you need one preflashed, you can get one here:
