You can come on board and make your own pledge - no one will tell you what to do. We're focused on financial discipline, but mostly on getting to know the gear we have and make some music, which is already happening over there.Abyssinianloop wrote: ↑Fri Feb 03, 2023 6:12 pm I was wondering if I could use module purchase abstinence from a previous year as credit toward a module in 2023?

an exception for the “unobtanium”

The “Financial responsibility” part interests me.

There are a few surgical tools I need (stereo processing) but I’m done with random browsing/shopping.
Nice

In my no gear pledge I stated an exception for the Cwejman modules where I'm on the wait list. You can start the challenge now. Most of us have some sort of exception in our pledges.

As for surgical tools, only one of us over there is a doctor as far as I know. You'd have to consult with them about exceptions.
Sorry. I couldn't resist.

Buy a $100 guitar and then 'slowly' hoard guitar pedals. That won't count against the Euro rule.
Or just sell as much Euro gear as you replace it with.

I'm in. Determined to stick to a one in == one out policy.
I really have all the gear I need. Which is not that much by some standards, but plenty for me.
..helped along my the fact that my paid work halved this year, and the tax man fucked me for most of my savings
(...obviously govt needs the cash to keep illegally detained refugees locked up indefinitely...
)
So yeah, one in one out. And already sold a shedload of Euro.

Cheers. It's all good though, enough to support me and my family, and means more spare time to spend with my kids so it's probably for the better in the long run

I was one in one outing last few months. It felt good p, because usually I,lie to myself and spend more when I’m trading.
But it’s over and I did it.
Now… I did get on the Cwejman list but I figure it’ll be 2024 by the time I get my number pulled… so…. Also it’s one or two Cwejman and I’m done. I truly don’t want the other Cwejman. I’m very much enjoying fully going deep with my current modules. I’m reading manuals again. Assimil8or and Disting ex and Usta have amazing manuals. Remember to hit record folks.

Re: No New Gear Year (2023)
I just cracked and bought a 2nd hand Dopher A-138M matrix mixer. :-(
It wasn't too much, I can afford it and it will help me sweat the other gear I've got more (so I tell myself).

I'll likely be joining in on this for 2024aevai wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:22 pm (Experimental idea)
I've spent the last year buying a lot of Eurorack modules.
I feel I'm at the stage where I have more than enough and I want to really learn to use what I have. Even simplify my setup a bit. Focus on actually playing and making music, and also build all the modules that I have bought PCBs for.
My plan is to try go the whole year (2023) without buying new gear and thought it could be fun to get together a group of people who want to do the same. We could all keep in touch and share music etc.
Maybe "easy" mode is reassessing mid year (or each new season) and only purchasing new modules at predefined points.
Anyone else interested in trying something like this?

What? Extending to 2024? After so much work trying abstaining myself! I’ll definitely buy a Needham 27U as soon as I pass to the other side of 2023.thevegasnerve wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 2:38 pmWe will likely need to extend so u good.lonefront wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 1:33 pmI'll likely be joining in on this for 2024aevai wrote: ↑Wed Dec 14, 2022 11:22 pm (Experimental idea)

We’ll just carry it over to 2024, and anyone who wants to continue can, and anyone who wants to join up new can do that as well. In fact people can join up now. There isn’t a deadline.

The stoicism mixed with pure desire in this thread is refreshing. Just raw human nature going on here and I appreciate it…

I did a little purchase for those Landscape Allflesh (that name is very... well I feel wrong googling that name on my work computer) touch point patch connectors. Do "cables" count as gear? If not I'm still going strong!

Re: No New Gear Year (2023)
Th definition of gear is all up to you, but I don't think any of us over on the Discord would consider that as equivalent to a module. We each make up our own pledges. The important thing is, are you making music and getting to know your system? Patch cables are pretty important for doing that.robotsarered wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 6:23 pm I did a little purchase for those Landscape Allflesh (that name is very... well I feel wrong googling that name on my work computer) touch point patch connectors. Oh, and now I'm curious about the Allflesh, too, but I'm not doing any Googling either.

With the talk about extending this into 2024 and the number of questions pertaining to the absolutism of “No New Gear Year”, perhaps it would best reflect the spirit of this effort to reform it into a club of sorts, a kind of Eurorack Temperance Society, where the exact definition of “temperance” is up to the individual.
Or something … I’m just thinking out loud …

I’ve thought about this. I plan on running the Discord into 2024, so I will have a conversation over there sometime with the admins and users about renaming and carrying things on. I like your suggested name BTW. Good humor, and says what it does.megarat wrote: ↑Mon Feb 06, 2023 8:05 pm With the talk about extending this into 2024 and the number of questions pertaining to the absolutism of “No New Gear Year”, perhaps it would best reflect the spirit of this effort to reform it into a club of sorts, a kind of Eurorack Temperance Society, where the exact definition of “temperance” is up to the individual.

Re: No New Gear Year (2023)
It’s working well for me so far. No unplanned purchases except for an iPad synthesizer app. Of course, being on another level of the house for 6 weeks recovering from knee surgery is helping. We’ll see how I do once I get back to the modular.thevegasnerve wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 8:57 am Made it thru another month! Started recording again too. Re: No New Gear Year (2023)
I’m feeling like my head is spinning.thevegasnerve wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 8:57 am Made it thru another month! Started recording again too. How is everyone doing/feeling about slowing down?

In one direction I see all the gear in my office/studio that I don’t use often enough, and in the other all the shiny new things I could/want to add to my collection.
I’ve definitely slowed down, although I can’t see how I could have sustained my 2022 levels of buying to be honest.
I don’t want to sell more stuff in case I’d regret it, but I need to in order to fit all the gear I actually want to use into my office.
I can’t find any satisfaction with my nearly finished modular cases that all seem to be messed up somehow at the moment by either some of the latest or future planned exceptions/missing acquisitions. But I think I’m slowly starting to think more pragmatically about it.
I’ve also seemed to have lost my music mojo at the moment, and most things I do don’t really pass my quality threshold for recording. Which makes me feel miserable, and makes me want to buy new gear, but now that too makes me feel miserable.
This said, I think it’s just a phase, and I feel like I soon will start to make more sense of all these things. There are also new modules that were ordered/planned in 2022 coming out soon that i’m really looking forward to, so I will definitely get a boost and should start feeling more content with what I now have and can use.
