XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Sofia is an unusual analog oscillator based on an original waveforming principle. The sound is a mixture of a warm saturated base tone and two modulating ripple elements. A wide array of control inputs coupled with separate outputs for numerous components of the sound shaping chain allows for extensive self-patching and complex animation of the final waveform. The resulting range of possible sounds is surprisingly vast, including but not limited to: vowel-like, tearing hard-sync effect, woody pings, warm and fuzzy sine-like evolving tones with a touch of bright sparkle on top. Sofia pairs very well with filters, but it also shines with just a VCA.

Koszalin is a full stereo frequency shifter (2 ins / 4 outs) offering both quasi-exponential and linear frequency change of up to +/-5kHz as well as full stereo feedback under voltage control. Frequency shifting results in linear translation of signal spectrum producing all kinds of atonal sounds. It should not be confused with frequency scaling, also known as pitch shifting. Complex phase cancellation patterns occurring with frequency shifting and deep feedback produce spectacular barber-pole effects. Koszalin offers direct control of feedback amount, feedback routing, and feedback response. It also facilitates frequency modulation of any stereo audio signal, thanks to the linear TZFM input.

These two together seem like a wonderful paring! Very Very interested in both.

Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Agree--both look great, as do the new Leibniz system modules. I think any type of foundational module present in early modular is worth adding to a modular system. The Buchla 185/285 frequency shifter is something I've always liked, so Koszalin would be a missing piece for my system.
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
No info yet if the freq shifter is analog, correct? wonder how it compares to e.g. the newish Doepfer freq shift.

I can already imagine what can be done with these, the Koszalin could be fantastic at deriving percussion sounds in tandem with melodic content via Sofia. Quite the powerhouse in complex analog terms. Super!
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Both previews sound excellent. Haven't been interested in new modules for a while but these have me excited.
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Didn’t expect to find myself wanting a new oscillator in 2022, but here we are. Those are some very intriguing sounds from Sofia for sure.
Turn on. Plug in. Slew down.
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Amazing demo. I'm curious of the price of both. The osc will probably be around 600$ if odessa is.
The freq shift curious too. Also how it compares to the Sketchy freq shift which sounds super tasty

You may have a year or three to think about it.

Very curious to hear more from these this week. Koszalin in particular is intriguing me in that it just fits that 10HP sweet spot. Will have to hear more from Sofia, but initial impressions are very strong!
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Excited to see new Xaoc stuff, these look cool.

Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Yeah, can’t wait to try those two together. Seems like a perfect marriage!
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
This looks promising. I’ve been thinking about getting a dedicated complex oscillator for a while, with the Cosmotronic Vortex piquing my interest, and this deepens the field.
It would be amazing if this could achieve paraphony with the Hel expander, but that’s probably too much to ask.

Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Why are Xaoc modules always so goshdarn fresh.
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
the frequency shifter has got to be digital, right?
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
That's my guess too considering the pretty low power draw and the stereo path in 10hp, they also usually write analog on their panels, still the teaser sounds great!
Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
The Sofia demo really didn’t do much or excite me much personally, but really interested in that freq shifter for sure.

Re: XAOC Sofia oscillator and Koszalin frequency shifter
Exactly, which is why I said it probably wasn’t going to happen. But XAOC billed the Hel as a generic module to work with future VCOs (other than Odessa), so it made me wonder if they had any clever tricks up their sleeve with this.
