Any thoughts about Rides In The Storm

Post by DomIndus »

I see that there is nice (and not so expensive) modules from this company Rides In The Storm.
There's even this quad enveloppe generator which is very nice: https://rides-in-the-storm.de/product/qeg/

I wonder if anyone has any experience with their modules? General / build qualit, etc.

I only have their quad mult so I can't really talk about them in general, but the build seems good and the front panel graphics are cool.

Their FEG ADSR module also looks interesting. Anyone has tried one already?

I only have their QAM quad active multiple. Feels very sturdy and had zero issues. Very compact.

Just ordered the DMO (voltage controlled dual LFO with crossmodulation) and noticed that they have quite a catalogue of modules at nice prices but seems to fly under the radar. People should check them out.
Modular mayhem! And a sweet melody.

Could you use the DPM as a basic 3.5mm to 1/4” Jack converter for two stereo outputs (one on A side, the other on B) to non-modular gear?

I own an XXM mixer.

The build quality is professional, I wouldn't know what could be done better. The face plate is 2mm aluminium, not flimsy PCB. The printing is also professional grade.

The design is OK, although I would have preferred plain black or silver.

Function wise it does what a mixer does... I haven't noticed any cross talk or sound issues, but I haven't compared it side by side to other mixers. It also offers some options for usage: AC or DC coupling, 1x8 or 2x4 channels and inverted out.

There are not many 8-channel mixers in 8hp, and at 70€ it seems to be a bargain.

I think the partial letters on the modules will spell Rides in the Storm.

Just got my second FEG envelope generator and a BOC oscillator yesterday. Find these modules rad so far & happy to see that Uwe is active after doing good stuff for MFB.

As for the env generator, this one can get very snappy but doesn't click at all. extra functions like CV over long/short time and looping are handy. The older one (bought a month back) has slightly different pushbuttons (shorter, so the newer one seems an improved version). The VCO tracks well and sounds solid - did a shotout versus 3340-based VCO and find the saw has more brilliance and the square is hardly less hefty. Triangle is on the DOC sounds more like a sharkfin - dunno if this can be trimmed to taste. Can post soudn if there's interest and think these modules are definitely worth checking out!

got the QUA.
currently the only available active quad attenuator in 4hp?
it's a great companion to the Ochd.

Have you gotten the DMO? I am quite interested in it, whether it goes up to the low end of audio rate, and overall how good it sounds.

I imagine it's digital, though it doesn't say on MG or on the Rides in the Storm website.

Not yet, I think that it will be in stock in a week or so.

Why do you think that it's digital? Seems like a typical analog design to me. :hmm:

Well, I hope it's analog, but when a manufacturer doesn't say and they have managed to fit so much into such a compact (8 HP, 25mm deep) space, I assume the signal path is digital.

Hm, perhaps. The rather high power consumption of 120mA might also indicate some digital stuff going on, maybe?

Maybe that too is an indication; I don't know the first thing about power consumption in modules.

When you get the module and get a chance to play around with it, please come back to the thread to give us your impressions.

It turns out my supposition was wrong, it is in fact an analog module.

And the range is .08333Hz (1 cycle every 2 minutes) to 6kHz. I think I'm going to have to get one.

was just recording the Rides FEG for a "snappy" comparison and thought I'd post here too

two sounds, first modulated by Microbrute ADSR, then by the FEG on fast mode (all controls down except for decay) -- really like those envs and somehow wish I'd gotten the quad version in the first place.. :)
snappedudel.mp3
(3.23 MiB) Downloaded 5 times
further down some stoopid(?) shootout of the Rides DOC oscillator against a 3340-based VCO (first sound always the 3340, followed by the DOC)

RAMP
3340_DOC_RAMP%22.mp3
(240.25 KiB) Downloaded 5 times
SQUARE
3340_DOC_Square_2.mp3
(576.25 KiB) Downloaded 6 times
PWM
3340_DOC_PWM.mp3
(433.75 KiB) Downloaded 5 times
TRI
3340_DOC_TRI.mp3
(353.5 KiB) Downloaded 5 times
bit of a random comparison, sure, but since the 3340 is so omnipresent maybe that's a doable "reference;" ramp and tri on the DOC are markedly different here (i like...)

On the QEG, is it correct that the E/B button causes the envelope to re-trigger whenever the end of Release is reached?
