Toppobrillo Multifilter 2!

Post by toppobrillo »

Hi, so with the first 2 modules I planned for this year now entering production, I wanted to introduce the 3rd- Multifilter 2 ! This one has been in the works for a while, and in fact, I made the initial prototype nearly 2 years ago?.. where does the time go!? Initially it was 10HP, and did maybe too much... too cramped. This layout is much better, and doesn't really lose any of the core functionality I set out for initially. Panel is probably self-explanatory for the most part, but here are some notes:
Screen Shot 2021-11-08 at 4.57.24 PM.png
The filter core has not really changed. This is good.

the inputs are on a crossfader, and the summed mix-level is dial-able/ voltage controllable to into soft-clipping, as per the original.

The voltage-controlled variable-output is selectable to morph from L-B-H or L-N-H. This can be made to track the cutoff frequency (or not) for some very cool effects, ie 'frequency ducking', etc.

dedicated PING input percusses the filter in a very nice and predictable way, the 'envelope' tracks frequency. here's a nice example of this:

Parts were already procured for this projected run of ~200 units, and this will be set for production concurrent with the Minimix. I will open a preorder and take a small deposit once the new prototype is built and verified. projected MSRP is also in the 250 range. thanks fer lookin!

The first pinging video sounds like a very realistic bell. Very cool. Very excited for this one!

Pings sound great. What kind of filter topology is this?

I like it a lot. How is it different than a lot of filters around ?
It does sound different but i'm curious about the technical aspect of it

Will there be a black version? Also how aggressive can it get? :) I am also curious about the topology but those pings sound A plus

I'll just add to the chorus that this filter looks great. Love the ping.

I was just using my TWF and thinking, "why aren't there more Toppobrillo modules?"

12HP. like the original.

yep. I'll just have to record a demo so you can hear it. I produced this module like 10 years ago, here it is on youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... ultifilter

there are bound to be decent audio clips floating around too. It's a state variable filter. Yeah , it's stable enough at high Q to ping like that, It's not hard to dial in, no finicky 'sweet spot' . people sometimes ask "what's special about your filter?" and I'm just like- well, it's just really well designed. It can self-oscillate reliably over the entire audio (and well below if you feed it some CV, variable phase quadrature VCLFO wassup) range with relatively stable amplitude, Q is nice and flat up to 15KHz (this *not* being the case is often the cause of this type of filter getting squirrely at higher Qs, due to phase issues, which IMO is a bad thing.) it is also realtively low noise and distortion , can be as clean as you need it be. there is a good amount of extra input gain available as well as a soft clipping gain stage so it's easy to dial in some distortion on the input to give the filter more to chew on.
I was just using my TWF and thinking, "why aren't there more Toppobrillo modules?"
working really hard on that, parts shortages be damned! I have three more modules lined up to work on and make in 2022... so here's to hopin we get some parts flowing sooner than later.

None of the demos are loading for me but maybe that's my dumb phone. The functionality of this looks amazing! Between this and a filter 8 it feels like you can get all your filtering needs met! At least they meet all of mine! Would make for a gorgeous pair!

I do find the panel a little hard to read at a glance. If I look it get it, but that at a glance readability isn't quite there. Would using specific colors or even shades of grey to differentiate the control, attenuverter, Jack flows. I just think a little bit of variation between them would make this a lot quicker to read at a glance. But that's just me!

Functionality and layout look great! I'll have to wait to hear it until tomorrow.
