Noise Engineering - Vice Virga

Post by tdallas » Sun Oct 10, 2021 2:57 pm

Beside the two new Versios (Melotus / Lacrima) Noise Engineering also mentioned this 8-input, 8-output sequential / addressable switch in the actual newsletter:

https://noiseengineering.us/products/vice-virga
https://www.modulargrid.net/e/noise-eng ... rga-silver
-> Manual

Vice Virga is an 8-input, 8-output sequential/addressable switch with a plethora of features and extensive patchability. Vice Virga can be configured as a single 8-channel switch, two 4-channel switches, or four 2-channel switches. Equal parts automated patch arranger and performance tool, Vice Virga has loads of switching control options. Whether you want to chain sequencers, swap outputs on an oscillator, remix a trigger pattern, or mix up every connection in a patch just to see what happens, Vice Virga can do it!

There is already a short introduction embedded within the NE Superbooth video (start at 14:41)

And here is the (first) official demo:

As someone still quite new, and with zero understanding of what a switch does, do you experienced wigglers think this unit would be a good place to start learning, or is this something quite advanced and overwhelming to my fragile, somewhat scrawny intellect?

I like Noise Engineering modules and have a few BUT their names are nonsensical and forgettable unless you know Latin. It's a mild annoyance that makes me tune out when people are talking about them. I don't talk about their modules that I own because I'm not 100% sure what they are called. Hopefully the marketing department is listening. Good gear tho!

@fastlanestranger: there are some good explanations out there what a (sequential) switch can do, e.g. https://youtu.be/YSGjui1QDw4 or https://youtu.be/QbxaWluHXEU. You can also check such modules out for example in VCV first.

I do own a Doepfer A-151 which is straight forward to use and recommend as a not quite expensive switch.

At first glance in the manual the Vice Virga seems way more feature packed, so I don't know if this fits your needs -> https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/ ... 1633043575

I'm sure "A-101-3" is a much clearer name, as are "Let's Splosh", "Flamingo", "Skyline", "XO106r5", "292t", "Erfurt", "Wiretap", "Heimdall", "Beehive," etc.

Why is it NE gets all the complaints about naming? I don't remember which Doepfer modules I've owned (by number) unless I look at their list. But with enough usage the names are pretty to associate with the function. I never confused Mimetic Digitalis with Manis Iteritas...

This :hihi: it is way harder for me to remember the Doepfer codes than a LIP, BIA or Desmodus.

It has to be mentioned once on every NE thread, it's in the forum TOS. RE threads have to have price complaints. MN has something about the edgy font. It's pretty simple!

I recognize my bread and butter Dopefer modules by function, not model number. Dopefer Quad LFO is the name I recognize. Not the number. The numbers are easier for me to remember than Latin.

One of my NE modules is the Roti Pola, a 4 input bipolar mixer. I had to look up the name just now to talk about it because I remember it as Roly Poly which is coincidentally the name of an isopod crustacean of the family Armadillidiidae (also known as pill bugs).

Yes. Instruo talk is ignored for the following reasons:

1. questionable names
2. questionable prices
3. questionable aesthetics

Although, it appears they make some really nice modules. I have to discriminate unfairly or else I would need to buy a bigger house for my modular.

New product idea AND name for NE:

Summa Summarum
Matrix Mixer with a few tricks up it's sleeve
Needs lots of knobs and lights

I might even buy this. Serious.

The names are literally supposed to be tongue in cheek hack Latin. Steven has said as much, so try to roll with it!

Believe it or not I knew that. They're also called Land Shrimp!

Not sure why but I can remember a lot of weird shit like that better than I can remember the NE or Doepfer module names; even for the ones I own.

Back on Topic....
I'm a switch freak so if course I'm interested. The panel looks a bit of a mess to me at first glance but if the functionality is there I could struggle through that bit. Time for me to take a peek at the manual.... :hyper:

Read it! I'm sold. The Offset, Behavior and Advance features are sweet!

Any idea how much voltage drop this has for v/oct sequences? I’m guessing this will not be very precise for pitch … I don’t see any mention of it on their product page or manual.
