Joranalogue ORBIT 3 - Double-Scroll Chaos Oscillator

Post by joranalogue » Tue Sep 14, 2021 11:53 am

Chaos ensues

Image

In everyday usage, 'chaos' means 'disorder, 'randomness'. In mathematics however, chaos has a very specific meaning. Chaos theory deals with systems exhibiting highly irregular behaviour, seemingly random yet completely deterministic.

Applying this to the world of modular synths opens up a whole new world of modulation opportunities, introducing a natural irregularity to otherwise purely ‘mechanical’ music, yet with much more control and repeatability than just simple randomness.

In chaos theory, the combination of all possible oscillations at a specific set of parameters is known as the ‘attractor’. Orbit 3 incorporates a modified electronic analogue of the classic double-scroll attractor. Since it contains some (bi)stable regions in addition to chaotic ones, this type is known as a ‘strange’ attractor.

The voltages at each of the module’s outputs can be thought to describe the orbit of a particle through 3D space around two equilibrium points. The positions of these points, as well as the distribution of the orbits and rate of movement can all be adjusted under manual or voltage control.

Not just limited to low frequency modulation use, Orbit 3 can operate in the audio frequency domain as well, yielding a variety of waveforms from its three complementary output pairs. These span a wide range, from near-sine waves to white noise. The addition of temperature compensation and calibrated pitch tracking makes for an unconventional and lively, yet also accurate audio oscillator.

And when you need a break from all that musical chaos, simply connecting any pair of outputs to the XY inputs of an oscilloscope will surely not disappoint!

Coming in Q4 2021.

hmm ... chaos with v/oct trimmer ... interesting, I wonder how pitch-stable and how chaotic it can be ...

So this circuit is similar to Ian Fritz EZ Chaos / 'Double Well' Chaos right? Might set a point of reference for people who want to learn more about Chaos circuits and how they can be used in modular: http://ijfritz.byethost4.com/Chaos/ch_over.htm

O3 is temperature-compensated and factory calibrated. You can expect the same performance as Filter 8 in this regard. And it'll happily go from stable to full-on chaos!

It is indeed a type of chaos oscillator, but that's about where the similarities end.

So I am on the lookout for some additional modulation. Wanted to keep it classic and give Batumi a try (got some options for random already with Verbos random sampling and the turing machine) - but maybe this is more interesting?
Not clear to me yet how musical it can be as a modulator. Also how slow it can go...

Just wanting to confirm that 'double scroll' is synonymous with 'double well'? Obviously your circuit has many bells and whistles that his doesn't, but the theory is common between them, no?

I was just about to edit my post because I found the manual! :)

Btw, super well done on the release of these - nice teaser (got me interested for sure), and then to have video, website, manual all up and running - professional!

I don’t want to bore everyone by writing a huge post to explain the why and stuff which have no interest to anyone. So just a question : what does it mean coming in Q4 2021 ? And an other remark : thank gods i haven’t bought JUST YESTERDAY those 10hp stuffs cause this seems perfect for me.

My Gen 3 and Morph 4 will be happy, I’m in !

Edit : Step 8 looks great too but maybe later. The other one looks great too but not for me !

I love how rational Joranalogue's module is, even chaos can be tamed down to a v/oct oscillator for musical melodies :tu:

It usually means the fourth quarter of 2021, so Sept 1 - Dec 31. But @joranalogue may have a more precise answer.

We're yet to determine an exact release date but they're coming by the end of the year!

Made an account just to pop by and say that I’m a big fan of your modules and I’m really looking forward to seeing more demos of this guy. I have 10HP left for an OSC and would love something like this to pair with my Generate. Very excited to hear the range of sounds it can produce, your description of “near-sine to white noise” is just what I’d love, I’m already imagining it as an incredible “Mod” OSC for my G3.

Hope you’re enjoying SB. Take care.

how different is it from Fritz Hypster?
asking because I build all NLC and want/have all Joranalogue.

The circuits are quite different. Although O3 has one less dimension, it adds temperature compensation, V/oct. pitch tracking, better attractor control, reset input, gate/pulse output and balanced output amplitudes while being 2 HP slimmer.

Looks like a nice module indeed. I wish we had more demos of its sound as an oscillator - in its video, Synth DIY Guy used it mainly for modulation purposes.

That would be great.
I'd also be really interested to hear a thorough demo of it being used as a sound source.
