Fear of a Frac Planet

Post by soup » Sun Sep 26, 2021 12:48 am

The pandemic got me to start playing around with laying out pcb’s. I’m mostly doing banana stuff but have made a few that will go both ways. I know there’s still a few people out there building frac stuff so in case anyone is interested here are a couple gerber files and build docs...

The panel designs are made to fit banana jacks so will probably only fit the wider mini jacks synthcube uses, and I’m using BugBrand style mta-100 connectors for power. Other than that it shouldn’t really matter what flavor of frac you like.

Multistate Filter
This is based around the Stroh modular MicroState from this thread…
https://modwiggler.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 7&start=25
It tracks well for a few octaves and pings nicely. There’s already a few good state variable filters in frac but I like this one too…

Send
This is one half of the Bastl Hendrickson, basically just a simple send and receive with switches for impedance and gain settings. It works well for integrating fussy guitar pedals into my modular…

Your front panel designs are really elegant and well thought out. Thanks a lot for sharing these!

Thanks for the nice comments!

Yves said ok, so here are the files for 2 banana frac flavored yusynth modules. I think that Philmore 70-524 style minijacks would work well in the place of banana jacks, I will have to get a few to try out.

Random Gates
http://yusynth.net/Modular/EN/RANDOMGATE/index.html
This requires a CD4006 which you can still find but they do seem to be getting more expensive. (Too many 909 clones in this brave new world?) I added a switch to choose between 2,4 or 8 gate outs...

Pulse Delays

CD14538's seem to work well in place of the original 4538's and are easy to get...

Wow, these are better looking than 90% of the commercial designs out there.

I'm sure they'd look just as good in black

Ha ha! Thanks y'all. It's all Tom's fault anyways, I fell head over heels in love with a SynthVoice and wanted to give it a friend, soon enough things spiraled out of control!

Here are a couple CGS modules with permission from Ken Stone...

These are super nice! Well done.

I really like your super clean UX emphasis, the consistency. I have thought hard about banana jacks, and I see the value. But the multicolor 0.125" cables available kind of flipped me back!

So, I too am doing Frac, but PAiA style. I am getting closer and closer to all-BJT implementation in TO-92, rather than ICs.

All these designs can be made with 3.5mm jacks too! The Philmore 70-524 isolated 3.5mm jacks are roughly the same size as banana jacks and will fit in these panels. The designs with panel pcb's don't have 0V pads but a number of places you could make a connection. I'll include 0V pads on future layouts, I hadn't realized it was this simple. Here is the Yusynth pulse delays with minijacks...

Thanks for taking the time to try out Minijacks.

Those look the same as the ones from CPC/Farnell I've used before.

How is the feel of these jacks when inserting and removing plugs compared to the more typical jacks?

Can I ask where you are getting the panels made? It doesn't look like the JLC blue...

All the pcb's and panels are from JLCPCB. Any differences you're seeing are likely from the lighting or my crappy camera. There is a full copper pour which may change the color a smidge.

Awesome, thanks! Very, very tempted to put together a little Frac case just for some of these...
