MAKING NEW KV100S--READ THIS

Post by metasonix » Sun May 16, 2021 3:27 pm

Yes, I am again being poked by assorted random people who "demand" and beg for a KV100. THEY ARE ALL GONE and do not ask if we have any "b-stock" or anything else left.

It is possible to make some more that FUNCTION in the same way. It will NOT BE EASY. The finished product will NOT look the same.

Difficulty factors are

1) they WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT look the same as the old ones. Because we will be making a few, not 50 or 100 pieces at once. PC boards can be made, but reproducing the front panel with the stupid fucking cartoons will be difficult and costly. I would far prefer to make Front Panel Express panels with engraved legends--faster, easier AND cheaper but no damn cartoons and the "wrong color". Tough shit.

Close duplicates of the original yellow-powdercoated metal panel are a MAJOR ORDEAL and will require
A) it will have to be machined by the local machinist (I hope he saved the old CNC file).
B) Then powdercoated by someone, probably the company in Ukiah.
C) Then screenprinted, probably by a company 500 miles from me in Southern California.
Sounds like "fun"? It's not. It will take at least THREE MONTHS and cost a FORTUNE. All to have the stupid cartoons. Tough shit.

2) Some of the original parts are difficult or impossible to find and must be substituted. The potentiometers are NLA and must be subbed. I will have to scrape up some decent NOS tube sockets and THAT will not be cheap (the Chinese ones that rule the market are awful quality). The knobs will be different. I have a small stash of the DIP relays but the pushbutton switches that operated bypass, pulser and VCO functions will have to be changed to a long-handle toggle or similar. Yeah buddy: tubes are still no problem though they WILL be more expensive today. In fact the price of everything has risen esp. in the last year. Shipping costs, packaging, etc. have basically doubled or more. Tough shit.

3) the enclosure will HAVE to be different. I check it occasionlly, McMaster is constantly sold out of the molded toolbox originally used. No explanation other than "blame the rona". I would prefer to put it on a rackmount panel with a real cover on the PC board. Or make the panel to fit a different toolbox. This would allow extra space to store the power adapter and cables etc. but "oh god oh god it won't look the same as the original ones". Choose, dammit!!!

4) there will be hum because the original used an AC-output power adapter. Redesigning it to run on clean DC and reduce the hum/noise is possible but is a big job and further increases the damn price. Tough shit.

5) making it look close to the original production (except in a different toolbox enclosure and with other details different) will end up costing about $3000 apiece. Expect to wait 4-6 MONTHS. They won't be available thru dealers and only as a special pre-paid limited product. An FPE panel and different enclosure can bring your price down to about $2500 or maybe less. Either way it will take months.

I AM NOT IN THE BUSINESS OF MAKING EXACT-DUPLICATE COLLECTOR'S ITEMS FOR AUTISTS. There's your choice; accept it or STFU. We are extremely busy trying to fill backorders of RK modules this year, demand is off the hook and suppliers are "being difficult". I DO NOT want to make more KV100s. If you really REALLY are that desperate, it's gonna cost you. And you will pay for it UP FRONT.

I understand, though I think using "autists" as an insult or even just provocation here could be avoided.

Just putting this offer out there -- if you really want cartoons, I'd be happy to custom-paint your front panel with Sonic the Hedgehog themed pornography. I have only the slightest understanding of hedgehog physiology, and I certainly don't know how to paint, but I can promise you that I'll try my best.

Special discount for Miles/Shadow.

Very cool to see these reissued. I really hope that someday the TM-7 Scrotum Smasher gets remade again.

Did you know that hedgehogs eat other animals feces and rub it all over themselves. oO one really knows why they do this. Just throwing that out there in case you need more ideas for that "art"
I will be posting my new deals thread soon enough...

Sonic didn't look much like a hedgehog in the recent film (or the game for that matter) so go wild!
Always wanted a KV100 to go with my D1000, glad to hear business is brisk and demand high

Well, this message was shared around as much as possible. No takers.

Same old story: I suspect most of the noids only want an old product "badly" if it's a bargain. Because they're collectors looking to flip it for a quick profit. No intention of actually USING the thing. Mebbe I should tell more of them to FOAD right up front, ya know?

Is it a fool's errand to make individual RK modules of each setting on an Assblaster?

one module: noise gate/pulsar tuning
one module: vco/vco tuning
one module: filter resonance/filter tuning?
one module: ringmod and other add-ons?

Though looking at that, seems very close to RK5, RK4, RK6, RK3? - minus the Pulsar?

Wonder if you could make a small shared system of those four modules - maybe with the Pulsar as a fifth module?

Mr Barbour, you said in the intitial post that these won't be available through dealers, and requires pre-payment. Thats fine for me.

Is there a more formal way to express interest in this? Perhaps via email or through the metasonix facebook group?

I might be interested, but would like to see a mock up how the final product will look like.
