Favorite Drone Albums?

Post by dooj88 » Wed Jun 09, 2021 10:52 am

recommend me your favorites!

my very favorite is by Gregg Kowalsky: Through the Cardial Window. I believe the record was developed around his thesis in experimentation with treated acoustic sounds. it's the perfect drone album - enhancing the inherently unstable timbre of acoustic instruments and drawing out the details to create rhythm and moment, and adding in electronic instruments to blur everything together. dude has a master's degree in electronic music composition, so he knows what's up. i remember one of the first times i listened to this album lying on my bed, i physically felt like i was floating. first and only time that's happened while listening to music.. sober or otherwise. (i think it was the 2nd track..)

my second is by Growing: The Soul Of The Rainbow And The Harmony Of Light. it has such a variety of sounds on it, but the most memorable is the track Anaheim II, which sounds like looped/sustained chords through a metalzone pedal or something at first listen. but there's so much movement in the higher frequencies while the main focus sort of sustains and drifts around. i feel like this track helped me learn how to pick out details of what others might just hear as a static drone.

honorable mention is Loscil's Plume. i've listened to this waaay more than Growing, but i ranked that higher because of the ah-ha moment there. Loscil's music is like a warm comfy blanket on a cold rainy day. this might almost be considered down-tempo, since it does have some rhythmic components, but the focus is definitely on texture.

Eliane Radigue - Trilogie De La Mort:

ELEH - Homage Series:

Richard Lainhart - Ten Thousand Shades Of Blue (this is just an excerpt):

Calineczka - What Is Music And What Should It Be:

Matthias Urban - Passagen:

Rastko Lazic - Tones And Drones:

Lots of the work of Pe Lang, e.g. Meditation On Serge

Maybe a bit beyond "drone", but in a similar spirit and beautiful: Kali Malone - The Sacrificial Code:

That Gregg Kowalsky record is fantastic, thanks for sharing! Yeah it's got quite a range of timbres and kind of captures the melodical/chordal side of drone I am drawn to.

A couple ones that have stood out to me:
Christopher Bissonnette • Periphery

Christopher Willits • Horizon

These two are maybe moving in a more traditional ambient direction w/ more 'structure'
Kyle Bobby Dunn • Infinite Sadness

Alva Noto • Xerrox Île

Coil's TIME MACHINES, Queens of the Circulating Library, and Constant Shallowness Leads to Evil (perhaps not purely drone but the drones on there are out of this world).

+1 for Kowalsky, Growing, Loscil, Radigue, Lainhart, Bissonnette, Willits, Dunn, Celer and Time Machines.
Already into and love all of these. And thanks for all others mentioned- will have to check out some that were not previously on my radar. A few not mentioned yet that I enjoy:

sweet, thanks for sharing everyone! i'm familiar with some of these artists, but not necessarily the linked albums. my friend circle doesn't really indulge this music, so it's hard to get good recommendations. i love listening to drones in the morning, when i'm still receptive and pensive sipping coffee (we'll see how long that lasts when WFH ends..) anyway, glad to have some more to check out.
KEVIM DRUMM - IMPERIAL HORIZON
- this reminds me of Matthew Shaw (of divkid co-host fame) albums, specifically the Totemic Topologies. i adore those and can' wholeheartedly recommend them. i dig it.

luke, i haven't come across Coil yet but from your description sounds intriguing. i sampled a few songs and they have a very wide sonic palette - could be fun to jump into... one of them reminded me of an absolute classic i totally forgot about:

Pelt - Ayahuasca. you might have heard of the late jack rose, this was his first band before the american primitivism/raga/ragtime records. it's acoustic drone - with guitar, bowed bass, banjo and exotic instruments like a tanpura, tibetan bowls, chord organ and concertina. the first time i heard this i was driving through the sierra nevadas at night under a full moon, with snow and fog occasionally rolling in on the way to Yosemite. a magical background for a magical record.

shit, i almost completely forgot about our own famous wiggler - Keith Fullerton Whitman! all my musicbee playlists got deleted somehow, and i have a pretty large library, so i need to do some sorting.

comfy, melodic and texture rich:

Yes! KFW is excellent!

I missed including an old favorite too:

And recently came across this guy. Quiet, subtle stuff, really nice. This is from his album, "Terminus".
