Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

Thanks, no need to order another board. I'll look for the schematics. I'll make do with a single if I can't fix it. To be honest, between helping to design the reSEMble SEM tribute and building prototypes and fixing the FVS and 3 ARPs, I'm ready to just play a bit. Maybe it's time to go back to acou...

Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

Found another symptom. The Mix and Inv Mix outputs are dead. Hadn't noticed that before.

Are schematics still available for this VCO?

Oops, right. I didn't check, just used your text from above. It was built in 2015 - 2016, I'm trying to remember stuff.

Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

They are discrete NPNs. I'll try swapping a few ICs, and then the NPNs. I also used a polystyrene, but this thing has been working since 2016.

Thanks again.

Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

The one time I had a VCO behave like that, it turned out the main frequency pot was faulty. Replacing the pot fixed it. (I tried other things first, notably rewiring the pot, but that had no effect.) By coincidence that was an Ultrafade too but there is no particular reason that the Ultrafade desig...

Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

I reflowed the solder on the tuning pots and the matched pair. The flux is not water soluble. I also replaced the ferrites with jumpers for now but haven't swapped the trimmers yet. Something I just noticed 'though, is the pitch doesn't start to wander until it warms up. When it's cold, the pitch is...

Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

You might try reflowing the solder on the matched pair, and cleaning around it especially if you use water soluble flux solder. If it wasn’t completely rinsed, it can collect moisture from the air and start causing problems. You might try tweaking or even changing out the scale and HF trims, especi...

Re: Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

It just started out of the blue. It does not stabilize with warm-up. It's two VCO boards behind one panel, and one is fine, the other is crazy. Very odd. I replaced a few ICs so far, figured I'd try the easy stuff first. It's not the TL074s or the LM13700s. I'll check the solder joints on the contro...

Ultrafade is suddenly screwy

I searched for some old information, couldn't find anything so I figured I'd ask here just in case. One side of my dual Ultrafade is fine, the other has some pitch issues. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of what I could check first. Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAzmBR7s_vM ...

Re: Are analog polysynths worth it?

I still use my Kurzweil K2600XS nearly every day. It's all digital and sounds amazing. I also have an Oberheim FVS, it's all analog and sounds amazing. So, analog vs. digital is moot. Just get something you like.

I use this one from PM Foundations quite a bit. It's based on the SEM VCO but you'll need to build it.

Re: to Dremel or not to Dremel...

I use my corded and cordless Dremels constantly. Replaced the brushes once on the corded version, got the brushes on Amazon. No issues from either. I've used cutoff disks to cut panels, small drill bits for pilot holes, grinding and shaping and countersinking bits for all sorts of stuff. My stepmom ...

Re: Will Balanced Cables Work With Unbalanced Synth Outputs?

I'm running all of my synths and stuff into a Behringer X32 (bought used when I actually respected the company). All of the inputs are balanced, most of the outputs on the instruments are unbalanced (the Kurzweil might be balanced, I can't remember). No issues.

Re: Will Balanced Cables Work With Unbalanced Synth Outputs?

Many years ago I found this, not even sure where: Why it works - Balanced inputs consist in sending +signal on the tip and -signal on the ring. The receiving device (mixer, audio interface) then uses the difference between tip and ring, which is twice the signal. The point is that any additional noi...

I have a Siglent SDS1072CML. I barely know what I'm doing but, with some help, I've managed to build and troubleshoot 30 or 40 modules and two reSEMble panels, and restore an Oberheim FVS, ARP Odyssey, ARP Axxe and ARP Little Brother. http://www.amazon.com/SIGLENT-SDS1072CML-2-channel-Digital-Oscill...

Re: What are some of the more popular modules that you either are not excited about, don’t like or don’t find useful?

Maths. One of the first modules I bought and the first I punted. Disting, too much menu-ing for me. I usually leave it set at one thing. I have bought and sold lots of modules, but not really because I didn't like them. Sold Ripples because it was just too, uh, smooth. Sold my DPO because I'm an idi...

Re: Complex Osc vs alternatives

I'd be curious about this too. For whatever reason, one doesn't hear much about this interesting VCO. I sure like my A-110-4/A-110-6 TZFM pair. Oh, that sounds like an interesting pair. Agreed. I've been meaning to get one of these to fool with. I sold my DPO sometime ago, kicking myself for that. ...

My K2600XS is still my main keyboard. The keyboard itself is starting to show its age, I really need to look into new bushings at least. Too bad the K2700 isn't a sampler but since you can load samples, I can use my laptop to sample. I'm wondering if they've managed to make VAST understandable to a ...

I like to have some filters that can misbehave, say a Polivoks and Synthacon. I'm also a fan of the VCFs from PM Foundations, but you need to build those.

Re: Which soldering iron to get started?

I've always found it odd that beginners think they should start with stuff that is not what so-called experts would use. I think that's the opposite of what should actually happen. A beginner needs all the help they can get. Like quite a few people here, I use Hakko. I had just started building thin...

Check out PM Foundations on Tindie. None of the kits require difficult to get parts, even the Oberheim tribute stuff.
