Re: Layering/Stacking

There was a time in the ‘90s when that sort of thing was more common than not in rock mixes. These days it’s not really in vogue save for a few specific genres, but there’s nothing inherently wrong with doubling/tripling/etc. guitar parts if you dig that sort of sound. Huh? This is totally routine ...

Re: Poor man's Sanken CO-100K?

^hmmm... interesting. does the transformer act as a low pass filter in some way? MG = Microtech Geffell? Right, generally speaking audio transformers have a somewhat limited bandwidth, and moreover there are limits to their linearity in the extremely high and low frequencies. And yeah, by MG I mean...

Re: Poor man's Sanken CO-100K?

I think the revolutionary and unique aspect of the Sanken is its marketing copy. Many transformerless condenser mics can capture supersonic frequencies, even without modification. I’ve used Sennheiser MKH mics manufactured back in the 1960’s that do that trick well, and they sound great doing so. Th...

Re: Roland RE-201 Space Echo appreciation post

I have a 101. It doesn't have the reverb, but it's still a beaut. The pitching sometimes gets a bit weird as the motor sometimes randomly slows down, but it adds to the charm for me. I should get it serviced one day but mehhh I’d recommend getting that particular problem sorted sooner than later, b...

Whoa, that was extremely cool, major Gamelan meets early-20th century western classical vibes. I wonder what the chromatic cowbell(?) setup stage-right sounds like. found a video, Victor again - man he's good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj7ypX8WwFw Oh man, that exceeded my relatively high expe...

Re: Roland RE-201 Space Echo appreciation post

Space Echoes are even easier to maintain than a standard, professional-grade open reel tape machine, by design. They’re ruggedized and simplified in comparison to even the most basic reel to reel. My advice: get a good one to begin with (the best tape echoes I’ve had are the units I imported directl...

Re: McCartney II

Always dug this album and its willingness to be overtly LoFi and eclectic, despite its brief moments of anachronistic misogyny and racism. It’s certainly nothing ground-breaking (its most outré tunes sound like a watered-down YMO, or like a Berlin-trilogy knockoff with Macca’s typically high-pitched...

Re: Reel To rEEL

First off, where are you located (Revox makes sense in continental Europe, but in the USA you’d be paying Studer-level repair costs for what is essentially a prosumer-level machine, so domestic makes like Ampex or Scully may make more sense), and how many tracks are you looking for?

Re: External pre's essential for eurorack and line outputs?

Preamps are not essential in this application, though I personally tend to use them because I generally balance and interface my synth signals via transformers, which can have a voltage step down and/or insertion loss, depending on which type of transformer and how it is wired up. Overgeneralizing, ...

Yes, so long as the DC it outputs is the proper spec (in terms of voltage, current, and polarity).

Seems like a good fit, glad DS got to cash out while he can still enjoy it, and I’d bet Focusrite will do well in terms of utilizing the DSI IP as they have with Neve’s ISA designs for the last few decades.

Saw this auction and thought the photos may be of interest here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/114773568223 Most people are familiar with the two main ESQ-1 variants (the early DX7-like metal case version and the later revision housed in the standard Ensoniq plastic case), but I’ve always thought this ra...

Re: DIY Band split - 3 Freqs - which ones (E-Bass) ? (@studio guys)

Hey there, I’m not sure I fully understand the question; do you mean to ask about which frequencies are typically filtered-out for a given instrument in the context of mixing (this always varies based on the particulars of the arrangement and the overall production, but I could give a general guidel...

Re: How to use bipolar vca?

I’ve enjoyed the a-133 for years, probably a top-10 most used module in my system. Ergonomic, dependable, and always clear in terms of function thanks to the LED’s.

The manual has a few useful diagrams:

Re: Yamaha DX7 or Ensoniq SQ-80?

It doesn’t necessarily sound like either of those, maybe more d50-esque, but I’d bet a Korg Wavestation could get you there. I’d guess the sounds in the video you posted were mostly likely created with Synclavier, Fairlight, or possibly PPG, but those aren’t easy to come by. Having said all that, dx...

Re: I'm done with high end mic pres for synths (hello CR1604)

Sorry if this is off topic, but I am puzzled about the purpose of mic pres for synths. I thought the main purpose of a mic pre is to provide an enormous amount of gain to a very weak mic signal (the API 312 spec is 69dB gain). The purpose of the DI box / transformer (apart from isolation) is to tak...

Re: I'm done with high end mic pres for synths (hello CR1604)

This is interesting, and not inline with my own experiences. It’s probably worth noting that neither the 1272 nor the 312 were designed primarily to be used as mic pre’s, and are often racked and setup incorrectly for that task (both in terms of gain staging and impedance). Additionally, Lundahl tra...

Re: Toppobrillo Sport Modulator 2- discussion and signup

Oh dude, the dedicated ping input on the multifilter redesign sounds ideal. It’s my favorite filter to create drums with to sample or sequence, hands down (better for pinging than the Serge, even). If there was a way to maintain the resonant sustain while pinging and have it respond accurately to 1v...

Will this have an authentic leaky battery? Lol its standout feature. I get why people dig the polysix as a bread and butter poly, but I always found the sound a little too generic, especially for vco-based poly’s of its era. I kept my mono/poly, but more for the sort of unique feature set than its ...
