Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

i love vocoders. i built the L-1 vocoder years ago and its fantastic, but i'd have another. interested if more details are put forward, but gonna have to hear a working example too. ;) The major difference is that the L-1 doesn't have channel controls. Freeze and silence bridging are also missing. ...

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

Oh, in terms of what those "mystery knobs" might do, I have some ideas: Mixing the bands up in a number of preset ways Setting change of random bands being held/frozen Applying some kind of spectral tilt to the signal I looked up spectral tilt. Now I know what this is about. Looks like there are no...

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

I do love vocoders, but I'm not super sure I will ever use the channel gain pots - and they will increase the cost of building significantly. Count me partly in, but I'd want to hear how it sounds before I'd commit, I'm afraid. Great work, though! Yes, the pots increase the cost but I wouldn't call...

I'm interested in this new project.

I got into diy eurorack just when you were launching your 18 channel vocoder and was always blown away by it, though it was way too much build for me back then.
Thanks for your comment. This build will be much simpler. 8-)

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

Question: what power cable is supposed to be delivered with a Eurorack module? Is it a 16-pin header (from the supply) to a 10-pin header (to the module)? Or is it a 10-pin to 10-pin connector? I suppose it's this one (found on Thonk's website), right? https://www.thonk.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014...

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

OK, but isn't that a waste of valuable space if I don't use the remaining 1U as compared to the Eurorack format? Of course I can just increase the size of the panel vertically.

Did you also think of a 5U version?
I wanted to focus first on Eurorack as I am most familiar with this format. I am not sure yet what it takes to make it also 5U height.

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

OK, this discussion is going in the direction I was hoping for and I am still interested in feedback who'd be buying this kit with a front panel shown as is. I think you made the right decision about the saw! Decision not to put it in there or going with the initial idea to include it? I guess you m...

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

Looks nice. Add a field of jacks and I'd expect interest will exponentially increase. Euro users aren't generally too keen on modules with limited IO and less so on modules lacking generous CV inputs. I thought about adding CV control for an internal sawtooth generator. But then I considered it a w...

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

I am actually looking for feedback from those who could see themselves buy this kit. In this thread you can see that I sold quite a number of what I called bundles (not complete kits) in the past and builders were quite happy with the quality of documentation I provided. This time I am looking for d...

What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

I am thinking about offering a DIY 15-channel Eurorack vocoder (22 HP) to the community. This will be a much more affordable unit than the standalone version I have offered at muff's in the past. Here's the layout that I had in mind: https://vocoder.hoerold.com/images/Vocoder,%20modular.jpg Slew, Si...

Re: BUILD THREAD: 18-channel vocoder

The documentation was missing information about how to connect the anodes and cathodes of the front panel LEDs. I've corrected this omission. See Chapter 4.5 in the Assembly and Tuning Guide.

Re: 18-channel DIY Stereo Analog Vocoder

Just a quick update: The assembly guide now includes PCB component placement views (Chapter 21). They are useful in case you need to troubleshoot your populated boards because once populated, you can't really see the component part numbers such as R1, C2, etc. As always, you'll find the link in the ...

Re: 18-channel DIY Stereo Analog Vocoder

Save the junk mail. In 20 years you can present it to your children and grandchildren and show them odd advertising, such as people with masked faces. I am looking forward to the time when we start embracing each other again, look back, and say "wow, these were some rough 12 years"...

Re Q1: good suggestion. Let me see how I can integrate that in the documentation.
Re Q2: yes, you can use 1/4 W resistors. For more details on size constraints, see here on Page 2, "Resistors".

Hey gwpt, very cool! Thanks for posting the photos and the nice comments. Pando, if you look at the bundle request form and the BOM spreadsheet, you get a very good overview of the total cost. The cost shown by gwpt is pretty much what you have to pay if you do not have some of the parts already ava...

what was the asking price of boards / panels / chassis / etc this time around? (ie the stuff from you)
Check out the first post, it’s all there. Details are in the bundle request form.
