Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

I've done quite a few Progue mainboards with stencils & paste and still it takes 5-6h to populate all the SMTs for the mainboard. The good thing about the stencils&paste technique is that it's relatively easy to populate multiple boards at once. So, it basically takes the exact same time to make 1 o...

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

I hand-soldered everything except the 0.5mm pitch DAC, which I reflowed and still ended up with a bridge at the base of the chip - likely because I didn't want to make/buy a paste stencil so I applied paste by hand and added too much. Unless I mask with Kapton tape while working/re-working, I have ...

Great! And thank you for the kind words!

We might offer pre-cut wood sides (with a CNC machine), but they will be unvarnished. Let's see.

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

Hi all! Just wanted to let you all know that I finally updated our www.jsisynth.com website to have an online store. Safe shopping via Shopify for all the EU people. BTW, the first run of Progue metal enclosures will get painted next week, and then they are off to the silkscreen process. We ended up...

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

The first PCB-A's have been shipped and they have pre-programmed firmware that has MIDI Sysex update ability. So, PCB-A buyers don't necessarily need that STM32 programmer.

The production run of the Progue enclosures should be ready in 2-4 weeks.

Re: 5U vs eurorack DIY

Some modern components (like MCUs) are available only in SMT, which is not avoided by switching to a bigger modular format. Also, SMTs are cheaper. The best advice for SMT soldering is to have a professional optical stereo microscope available. Yes, they cost 200-300$ but they make working with SMT ...

Re: What's your interest in a DIY modular vocoder?

To Luka's point, the ideal would be an add on panel of jacks with whatever processing would be required also on the expander. It would connect to this main module with a ribbon header. Both types of use would then be supported. JH vocoder builder here. I implemented a cherry switch matrix (NOS part...

It might be time to invest in one of those Amscopes as I'll be doing more... THIS! I can't say I enjoyed SMD before my stereo optical microscope. After purchasing it, being tiny doesn't really matter anymore. It's not about my shaky hands, it's the near blindness when looking at those tiny pads. An...

Not SO. SSOP. It's smaller. There is SSOP32. It's about 11mm long, .65 pitch. Just has legs that stick out. SOIC 32 does exist, but it's kind of huge (like 20mm long). I agree that one would be silly. :tu: SSOP-32: SSOP32.png Ok, fair enough. Funny how the SSOP32 would still take about 6 times more...

Re: Updated SSI2130 VCO Datasheet available...

These days no-one should be hand soldering SMT parts for production anyway. I agree. I guess the reasons behind "why DIY?" vary enormously among DIYers, and some enjoy hand soldering even when there are 3000+ resistors to solder. High count builds like Deckard's Dream and Kijimi made me question my...

Re: Updated SSI2130 VCO Datasheet available...

I just finished my test boards with zero problems. Stencils, paste, and hot air. Easy-peasy. If you must hand solder it, then design the footprint with extra-long pads so that you can heat those with the soldering iron. Lots of Flux. Still, I highly recommend the stencils/paste/hot air -technique. A...

Edit: From the VCO side. Does your VCO use the rails for core references? That would be worth looking at too.
I bet my money on this horse, since way too many (free) VCO schematics has this.

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - AUDIO DEMO

Since we have the PCBs & PCB-As, but the EU webshop is still taking a while, we figured that we could just send invoices to you EU people and ship the PCBs without the shop. For the US, it's probably easier to purchase from Synthcube. Progue has two options: PCB only or PCB-A (pre-soldered SMTs). Th...

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - AUDIO DEMO

The panel is PCB material. This can be used with the Hammond enclosure and of course while building and testing. The custom metal enclosure that we are offering in the near future does not use it.
