There's also this!
Matrix Scanning 1V/Octave Keyboard Circuit
That works fine for the 3-octave Fatar, but there's no velocity. I've done a PCB for it a few years ago, but it's way more wiser to use a MIDI scanner and midi2cv, ie. you can play other synths with MIDI OUT etc.

Re: Soldering those super small SMD components without stencil?

All my troubles with small-sized SMDs are due to alignment problems and an excess amount of solder paste. You don't need stencils, but you need to SEE clearly, so buy a stereo optical microscope, nothing else comes even close. Just buy it! It's so easy to apply too much solder paste by hand, so when...

I think all the values populated are as per the ones listed by user 'sound' on the electro-music thread. 99% sure. I populated the boards about 3-4 years ago so I am a bit vague on it. I don't think I was very adventurous then. I am about to start tweaking some stuff as my mic amp doesn't amp the m...

The PSU section is actually a bit overkill for this kind of mono synth, but since the vco cores are refenrenced to rails, we tried to be safe than sorry. ;)

What should the polarity be on the 12VDC power adapter, center positive, or center negative?
DC polarity does not matter, both work fine! (PSU section includes bridge diode rectifier)

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

Finally, she lives! Thanks to Janne for your help and for creating a wonderful little synth. Great to hear! Enjoy! Stencils... yes, I'd love to be able to provide stencils for DIYers, but those are not very convenient to ship. I did build all my Progues with stencils, so going without might be hard...

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

Hand application of paste and hot air is really the worst possible way to control those two things. Its fine for spot fixes of single parts but doing a whole board like that is asking for trouble The problem usually is too much paste, since it's really, really hard to apply just a tiny dot. But, on...

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

U6/9 are doing their job OK so I’ll replace U5/7 and go from there. I have 3 spares as I bought 5 so I’m hoping I didn’t get a bad batch. While I’m at it I’ll replace the transistors too. The only time I can get an output in the normal audio range is to have both oscillators turned up to max volume...

CV looks ok. The issue might be with the U6&U9, or U5&U7. Also Q2&Q4.
Thanks. I’ll order up some replacements.
I suggest you first scope the buffer output (U6/9), it should be same as after the expo converter (3046 pin 1&5). Then move on to U5/7.

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

Setting aside my non-working midi issue, I have turned to the OSC 1 and OSC 2 problem. I am seeing nothing at the relevant test points (16 & 17) that gives me a steady state with cv/gate input. This is what my scope is measuring: 2E1314F7-4D78-4A04-9F65-CCDDB666B87E.jpeg With all trimmers at roughl...

I have a spare crystal so could replace it - I presume it’s not polarised but there’s a dot on the PCB ??
Yes, crystals are not polarized, that dot is unnecessary. You can program the STM without crystal, so it might be the source for your issue.

Scope U25 pin 8/10/12 &send midi and you should see something like this if the STM is fine.

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

Keyboard input works only from cv and gate inputs (but doesn’t give any recognisable output from OSC1 & OSC2, but noise works OK). Removing the cv and gate jacks to enable midi control does not work - no midi operation. All DIP switches are off for the default settings. I have D14 permanently lit a...

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

Ok. If you used arturia keystep as a cv&gate source, connected to Progues cv&gate jacks, it bypasses the midi section (stm & dac) and then you know that the issue isn't midi2cv related.

I’m concerned I may have cooked the STM32 (and possibly the DAC) as I had a lot of trouble soldering the STM32 and clearing a couple of solder bridges, but it did program OK without any issue.
Hi! Did you notice that the DAC IC is pin1=bottom-right, not top-left ?

Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

It seems the original BOM is missing C100 - C105 inclusive, which looking at the schematics are 100nF ceramics. Lucky I purchased a load of spares. Re: PROGUE - Analog mono synth - Available!

I know that the programming header is mentioned in the BOM, but is it really needed for the PCB-A version? Sounds like it isn't, and I didn't order it, but just want to be sure. The pre-stuffed boards are already programmed so future updates can be performed by sysex over MIDI, so no it is not nece...
