Re: KORG miniKORG 700FS

... I agree that the synth has a really amazing and unique sound. I've only had about 45 min with mine so far and I love it. You can easily get lost with just about any repeating arp sound as you tweak away. I am so glad that I finally jumped on this on after being a bit dismissive at first... I wa...

Re: What is the worst synth sounding you ever bought and why ?

This thread is really highlighting the wide variation in personal taste. The DSI Evolver range, which I like, seemed to be largely praised not so long ago and quite similar applied to the Arturia Brutes too. My comparatively recent 'toe in the water' introduction to the long disregarded Brute line i...

Re: Your stereo spring reverb

Haven't tried that many but I've stuck with my fairly simple Vesta Kozo/Kaza RV3 1U rack dual spring (circa 1985) which sounds very sweet and clean - spot on for synths. This is one of several spring versions from the company also known as Vesta Fire. Tried the RV1 but not as nice sounding, at least...

Re: Mutable Instruments’ Greatest Design

Shelves, which may not be her greatest or most influential design but is certainly an interesting one. I am borrowing my friend’s right now and it is super fun to play with. Shelves might be the most underrated MI module imo (that or Streams). It has v/oct tracking with two highly resonant peak fil...

Re: How important is VCO tracking to you?

Being more into tonal musical composition and experimentation, I much prefer to have VCOs that track well over several octaves so that any consistent de-tunings or additional non-linear subtleties can be introduced at my discretion. Recently got a Rossum Trident which, for an all analogue design, ha...

Re: why were old manuals better?

Old enough now to realise that manual writing isn't always as easy as you would think, but what really aggravates is when a key piece of information that should be at, or near, the head of the thing, gets first mention - and then sometimes almost as a footnote! - halfway or further into what may be ...

Re: Efficient polyphonic module/s

I'd recommend considering the Flame 4-Vox as an oscillator source, I use it in conjunction with the Doepfer Polyphonic system modules as a complementary digital/wavetable aspect. It's quite big at 29HP but when you consider the functionality - 4 separate wavetable oscillators (individual outputs) wi...

Re: Tendrils - ultra-slim patch cables

I'm currently redesigning the mold to have a ridge along the front that will make them easier to grab. I'm not sure if this will help very much, as the hardest problem is typically where many of these are plugged close to each other, we just don't get the fingers between the plugs at all. The extra...

Re: Tendrils - ultra-slim patch cables

These are good but having just bought a few packs of the angled ones for 3.5mm Eurorack I'm finding for certain modules where they are beneficial for better access, they're then very difficult to remove using my fingers alone especially on modules that have jacks nestled amongst pots which you don't...

Caught this news briefly in a haze last thing before retiring and didn't want to believe it. Woke up today to see that, alas, it's true. "Legend" is appropriate here and I consider myself fortunate to own several DSI era synths. Thanks for some wonderful instruments Dave. RIP.

Been thinking of getting an E520 for a little while after considering other 'effects' and their real-time performative limitations... funds quickly excavated... now one is in the post. Very nice work indeed Paul. Best wishes to you.

Re: Which of your VCO’s provides you with the most sonic versatility?

Might be worth considering the Rossum Trident. I have one and although it's still early days the results are good. What marks it out is the all analogue, wide range (10 octaves) precision circuitry with some unique and complex modulation possibilities between its 3 oscillators making for very 'music...

I could be mistaken, but something like a Klee sequencer (related to the Turing Machine) could also get you into this territory with a degree of manual intervention away from and back to the original construct.

Re: Modal Argon8

I'm shopping around for a keyboard I can use as a MIDI controller (mostly I want keys) and the pricepoint of these makes me wonder if I should get the 61-key version and perhaps feed two birds with one seed. Good/bad idea? Sounds like a good idea since that 61-key Fatar keybed is well regarded. The...

Re: How did you teach yourself electronic music?

Pretty much self taught, no academia. Not much out there, that I knew about, I was alone when I started. My very first fumbling DIY project (thank god it worked!) was an ETI magazine 'Complex Sound Generator' built in 1979 which was a kind of half-way house mini-synth - stylus on a metal keyboard - ...

Re: Befaco - Noise Plethora

I don't think its filter are temperature compensated so any tracking will be affected by room temp. Hmmm? In that department I'm guessing that like some VCOs the high resonance/self oscillating aspect of the filters would eventually settle down to a usable tracking strategy a little while after pow...

I'd recommend a pair of the smaller PMC monitors which use a transmission line design topology for a tight, tuneful and accurate bass which stays in balance right down to very modest sound levels.

Re: Befaco - Noise Plethora

Was completely sold on this module after seeing an early demo vid showing apparent melodic usage. However, as some have noted this isn't calibrated for more conventional 1 volt/octave tracking, even though as a 'noise' module it can strongly suggest pitches suitable for 'melodies' in some settings. ...

I agree with much of what's already been said about both, especially in terms of how much a module is physically used (finger access) and how much another may be less regularly accessed in that way. Having grown up with synths long before the arrival of the Eurorack format, even the original Doepfer...

Re: Disting reality check - the jacks are very bad!

@os I just got a Disting mk4 (new) and the jacks are not smooth. I like the smooth connection of my ES-8 and FH2, but the Disting feels like I’m pushing the cables into broken bits of metal. Feels really bad, like they may break. If I was to use a word to describe...it feels crunchy. I’ll assume th...
